Despite being outgained in total yards, 402 to 280, Mount St. Michael (4-0), the Catholic High Schools Football League defending champion, defeated St. Anthony's (1-3), 35-25, yesterday. In a rematch of last year's championship game, won by Mount, 21-7, the Mountaineers captured their ninth straight victory on the strength of NcHendia Tajong's three-touchdown performance. The Mountaineers, whose last loss came against St. Anthony's, a 40-21 setback last season, won despite using 29 fewer plays than St. Anthony's, which had 70. The teams combined for 952 all-purpose yards. The offensive explosion was highlighted by two long kickoff returns for touchdowns, one by Tajong (93 yards) and the other by Kwaku Osei-Tuto (85 yards) of St. Anthony's. James Millen, the senior quarterback for Mount, hit Craig Sinclair with a 48-yard pass for one touchdown and rushed 38 yards for another. Brian Neglia of St. Anthony's rushed for two touchdowns, and Mike Marotta raced 34 yards for another.

Sal Cotrona carried 16 times for 121 yards, including a pair of 4-yard touchdown runs, to propel Xaverian (1-3) to a 41-6 victory over St. John the Baptist (0-4). David Grippo rushed 5 yards for one touchdown and hit Joe Luddeni with a 28-yard scoring strike for another to pace the winners. Chris Roldos's 4-yard scoring run and Michael Hug's 30-yard fumble return accounted for Xaverian's other scores. Damian Montelelone (two sacks and a fumble) was a huge factor in limiting St. John the Baptist to 6 points. On Friday night, Miguel Reyes, a senior fullback, rushed 20 times for 143 yards, including four touchdowns to catapult Holy Cross to a 41-14 victory.

Jax Landfried, who completed 13 of 25 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns, rolled to his right and then scrambled back to his left to complete a 9-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 44 seconds to play to lift Manasquan (3-0) to a 26-25 victory over Lacey (2-2). Manasquan trailed, 25-20, before the winning play. Lacey, which was led by Greg Elias's 29 carries for 222 yards, drove to the Manasquan 40 with 47 seconds to play, but safety Tim Murphy caused a fumble and his teammate Ryan Meixsell recovered it. . . . Jamaal Burcher rushed 24 times for 230 yards and four touchdowns, and caught a 16-yard pass for another score, to help Delbarton (4-0) cruise past Clifford Scott (0-4) by 40-0. . . . Kearny (3-0) rode a 161-yard rushing performance by Eddie Pshybyshefski to a 33-13 triumph over Irvington (1-2). Matt Martone returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and Pshybyshefski caught a 39-yard scoring pass from Patrick Crygalis and ran 4 yards for another score when Kearny bolted to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Pshybyshefski also returned an interception 2 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. . . . Passaic Tech (4-0) erupted for four second-half touchdowns to defeat Manchester Regional (2-2) by 27-6. Halfback Thomas Patterson, New Jersey's leading scorer with 98 points, rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown for Manchester. Ken Thomas rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns for Passaic Tech. . . . Bergen Catholic (3-0) made a strong bid for the state's No. 1 ranking on Friday with a 17-6 victory over Montclair (1-2). The Crusaders' victory was fueled by Craig Pengitore's 70-yard pass to Ryan Bittner, Doug Kirchner's 37-yard field goal and Justin Dunleavy's 47-yard scoring run. Justin Ashe's 4-yard touchdown run capped a Montclair drive in the third quarter.

Andre Smith (two touchdowns) was one of nine players to reach the end zone for Ansonia on Friday night as the Chargers routed Kennedy-Waterbury, 73-0. In the victory, Adam Richmond kicked 7 extra points to bring his streak to 31 in a row.
